For Individuals Having Surgery in the Operating Room
What To Do Before Surgery
Complete and return the Health History and Registration forms. So that we can anticipate your needs better, we ask that you complete the Health History and Registration forms provided and return them to Westfall Surgery Center as soon as possible.
- Arrange transportation.
Please have a responsible adult drive you to our Center, plan on staying at the Center during your procedure and be able to drive you home when you are ready to be discharged. A comfortable waiting area is provided for the person who accompanies you. We request that you leave children at home. Children are more comfortable in familiar surroundings with people they know.
- Confirm your surgery.
You may confirm your appointment time by calling us at (585) 256-3862 after 11:00 a.m. on the business day before your surgery. Please be available on the day of your surgery for a scheduled appointment time between 6:15 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. While you have us on the phone, please feel free to ask us any questions you may have. We will be happy to answer them for you.
We are concerned about your safety at home after your procedure. If you do not have anyone at home to help you after your discharge, please talk with your doctor's office staff to see what arrangements can be made. Your doctor can give you a good idea of how much help you will need in the days following your surgery.
- Unexpected illness.
If you are ill on the day before or the day of your surgery, please call your doctor. If you are unable to reach your doctor, please call Westfall Surgery Center at (585) 256-1330. What To Do On The Day of Surgery
DO NOT WEAR MAKE-UP
- Please arrive promptly at your scheduled time.
- Bring your insurance card(s) and form(s).
- Have a responsible adult accompany you to the Center, stay during the procedure, and take you home afterward.
- Wear comfortable clothing that is loose fitting and easy to get on and off. A short-sleeve shirt that buttons down the front is preferable. Many of the procedures no longer require you to change into a patient gown.
- Please leave valuable such as cash, credit cards, jewelry, and watches, at home.
- Place any cell phones on the silent mode while at the Center and avoid their use in any patient care area.
What You Should Know About Your Anesthesia
Anesthesia is a critical part of any surgical procedure. All of our anesthesiologists are board-certified physicians who have been thoroughly trained in the field of anesthesiology. Your anesthetic will be determined by the anesthesiologist in conjunction with you and your doctor.
Your anesthesiologist will call you the night before your surgery to discuss your anesthetic and answer any questions you may have. The anesthesiologist will instruct you about eating and drinking precautions and whether to take your routine medications.
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK after midnight. (unless your anesthesiologist instructs you otherwise)
DO NOT SMOKE the night before surgery.
What To Expect On The Day Of Your Surgery
After you arrive at Westfall Surgery Center, you will be brought to the pre-anesthesia area. Your health history will be reviewed with you by a registered nurse, who will help you get ready, answer any questions, and put you at ease before your procedure.
- You will meet the anesthesiologist who will be providing your care during your procedure and be able to discuss any concerns you may have.
- From the pre-anesthesia area, you will be taken to the operating room, where every effort will be made to assure your safety and comfort during your procedure.
- After your procedure is over, you will be transferred to our recovery room, where our specially trained staff will care for you until you are ready to be discharged. Your length of stay will depend on the type of procedure performed and the type of anesthesia you received. Your anesthesiologist will determine when you are able to be discharged.
The recovery room nurses will provide you with written instructions from your doctor regarding your care after your procedure. It is very important for you to follow these instructions to promote healing and provide the best possible outcome from your procedure.
- It is important that you have a responsible adult available to take you home after you are discharged. Even if you plan to take a taxi, you must have another adult with you.
- When you get home, you should plan on taking it easy and have someone available to help you at home. For your safety, do not operate machinery, sign important papers, or drink alcoholic beverages for 24 hours after you are discharged.
- On the next business day following your surgery, one of our registered nurses will call you to make sure that you are doing well and answer any questions you may have about your recuperation. Please do not hesitate to call your doctor or 911 at any time if you think the situation is an emergency.
Special Considerations For Pediatric Patients
Special care is taken to make children feel safe and comfortable while at our Center. Parents are encouraged to bring their child in for a tour of the Center before the day of surgery to meet the staff and lessen their child's anxiety.
Guidelines for pediatric patients (children under the age of 18) include:
- A consent form for the procedure must be signed by the parent or legal guardian when the child is admitted.
- A parent or legal guardian must accompany the patient to the Center and plan on staying at the Center until the child is ready for discharge. Young children should be accompanied by two adults for the trip home.
- New York State law requires young children and infants to be properly restrained in car seats when riding in motor vehicles. Please assure that you have the proper car seats available for the ride home.
- Please bring diapers, bottles, and pajamas as appropriate. You may bring a toy, blanket, or pacifier if you think that it will make your child feel more comfortable.
- Parents are encouraged to stay with their children during pre-anesthesia and recovery periods to help maximize separation anxiety and give your child a sense of security.
Financial Arrangements
The Westfall Surgery Center fee will vary according to the type of procedure you have done. For your convenience, we will submit all insurance claim forms for covered procedures. You are responsible for all non-covered charges. Full payment is required upon receipt of our billing statement.
